Female infertility refers to the inability of a woman to conceive after trying for at least one year without success. It can result from a variety of causes, either related to the woman’s reproductive organs or other factors. Common causes of female infertility include:
1. **Ovulation Disorders**: These can prevent the release of eggs from the ovaries. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid issues can disrupt normal ovulation.
2. **Fallopian Tube Blockage**: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes prevent sperm from reaching the egg or prevent the fertilized egg from reaching the uterus. This can be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or previous surgeries.
3. **Endometriosis**: This occurs when tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside the uterus, often causing pain, irregular bleeding, and difficulty getting pregnant.
4. **Age**: As a woman ages, especially after 35, fertility tends to decline. The number and quality of eggs decrease with age, making conception harder.
5. **Uterine or Cervical Issues**: Conditions like fibroids, polyps, or a malformed uterus can interfere with implantation or cause miscarriage. Cervical mucus issues can also affect sperm from reaching the egg.
6. **Hormonal Imbalances**: Hormones play a crucial role in regulating ovulation. Imbalances can disrupt the cycle, preventing ovulation or proper fertilization.
7. **Lifestyle Factors**: Excessive stress, smoking, alcohol use, and being overweight or underweight can all contribute to infertility.
8. **Unexplained Infertility**: In some cases, no specific cause of infertility can be found.
Treatment options depend on the cause and can include medication, lifestyle changes along with counselling.
